The City

San Felipe de Puerto Plata, often referred to as simply Puerto Plata, is the eight-largest city in the Dominican Republic, and capital of the province of Puerto Plata. The city serves as one of the most important trading ports in the country.

Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Christopher Christopher Columbus gave the city its name of Puerto Plata when he first landed on the island in 1492.

The City Center is comprised of the largest collection of Victorian Style buildings from England.  Central Park is the home of the iconic art deco architectural Victorian-style gazebo and the famous church of St. Phillip the Apostle.  The amber museum, and the Brugal rum factory are well-known attractions in this city. 

Mount Isabella de Torres serves as a backdrop to the whole city, the best way to reach the top is by cable car where you will be greeted by a statue of Christ the Redeemer and beautiful botanical gardens.

 

El Malecón

The beach boulevard is a three mile open air stretch lined with bars and restaurants, Located right on the bay, at the western end of the Malecón occupies the Fortress of San Felipe.  The fortress was built in the 16th century to prevent pirates from seizing one of the only protected bays on the entire north coast.  For much of its life it served as a prison under Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship.

 

Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada

Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada are two important tourist complexes comprised of hotels and condo-hotels along a lovely golden sand coastline.

Playa Dorada is built around a Robert Trent Jones 18 hole Golf Course, and in the center is a commercial plaza with bars, restaurants, disco and gift shops.

Costa Dorada is a smaller enclave. This area is comprised of two hotels, a wine bar, a gym, a casino and nightclub.

 

Costambar

Costambar is a beautiful vacation spot and a favorite destination amongst the retired from all around the world.  Situated on the east end of the city of Puerto Plata, the beautiful beach is protected for its coral reefs and surrounded by almond and palm trees.

Mainly a residential area, apartments and villas are readily available to rent. As well as many restaurants and bars on the beach with a friendly atmosphere.
